TV Mounting and TV Installation in San Francisco
A TV mounting service puts your screen on the wall at the right height, level and secured to structure that can hold it. The Handyman SF sends local handymen for TV installation across San Francisco and the Bay Area, including nearby cities such as San Bruno.
What is included in TV installation
- Mounting on fixed, tilting or full-motion wall mounts
- Locating studs, or using the right anchors for brick and concrete
- Setting the viewing height and checking level
- Tidying cables with surface raceways or cord covers
- Mounting a soundbar under the TV and connecting devices
- Taking down an old TV and patching the old mount holes
Mounting a TV on San Francisco walls
Many homes built before 1940 have lath-and-plaster walls. Plaster can crack when drilled, and studs are harder to find behind it, so the mount must go into framing, not just plaster. Brick fireplaces and concrete walls need masonry anchors. Metal studs in some newer buildings need specific fasteners.
Earthquakes are another reason to do it properly. A full-motion arm with a large TV puts heavy leverage on the wall, and a mount into plaster alone can pull out in a shake. We also recommend strapping a TV stand or tall furniture to the wall if the TV stays on a stand.
Before your TV mounting appointment
- Buy a mount rated for your TV's size and weight, or tell us you need help choosing one.
- Pick the wall and the height you want, and note where the outlet and cable connections are.
- Tell us what the wall is made of and if there is a fireplace, tile or stone.
- Clear the area and have the TV unboxed if you can.
- If you rent, check your lease or ask the landlord before drilling.
When you need an electrician
Hiding cables inside the wall is possible only for low-voltage cables with a proper in-wall kit. The TV's power cord must not be run inside a wall. Adding a new outlet behind the TV, or moving one, is electrical work for a licensed electrician. Mounting over a working fireplace needs care with heat and viewing height, and the manufacturer's heat guidance should be followed.
